Microsoft’s recent announcement regarding price hikes for its Game Pass subscription service marks a significant change for gamers. Following its acquisition of Activision Blizzard for $69 billion CAD in 2023, the tech giant is adjusting its subscription fees to reflect its enhanced offerings and expanded game library. This move is part of Microsoft’s broader strategy to solidify its position in the gaming industry by leveraging the extensive catalogue and development capabilities gained through the acquisition.

The new pricing structure will see the monthly cost for PC Game Pass increase by CAD 3.39 to CAD 16.94. Meanwhile, the premium Ultimate tier, which offers additional benefits and exclusive content, will rise by CAD 3.39 to CAD 25.25 per month. These adjustments are set to take effect in September, coinciding with the phasing out of the standard subscription tier on Xbox consoles. This change means that Xbox gamers will now need to subscribe to Game Pass Ultimate if they want access to new game releases on their launch day.

These price increases are significant, and they underscore the growing value of the Game Pass service. With the acquisition of Activision Blizzard, Microsoft has added a wealth of popular and critically acclaimed titles to its library, which are now available to Game Pass subscribers. This includes blockbuster franchises like Call of Duty, World of Warcraft, and Overwatch, which have substantial player bases and ongoing content updates. The integration of these games into the Game Pass ecosystem is likely a key factor driving the price hike.

It comes after Microsoft announced in May that its most eagerly awaited new title, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, would be available straight away to Game Pass subscribers. This announcement has generated significant excitement and anticipation among gamers, further highlighting the value of the subscription service.

For Canadian gamers, the price increases are as follows:

  • Game Pass Ultimate: The monthly subscription will increase from CAD 22.27 to CAD 25.73.
  • PC Game Pass: The monthly subscription will increase from CAD 13.70 to CAD 17.12.
  • Game Pass Core: The annual subscription will increase from CAD 85.69 to CAD 96.05.

While these changes might be seen as a financial burden for some subscribers, they also reflect the enhanced value and broader range of games and services available through Game Pass. Microsoft has consistently added new titles to the service, ensuring a diverse and up-to-date library that appeals to a wide range of gamers. The company also frequently offers discounts and promotions, which can help mitigate the impact of the price increases.

In addition to expanding its game library, Microsoft has been focusing on improving the overall Game Pass experience. This includes enhancing cloud gaming capabilities, allowing subscribers to play high-quality games on a variety of devices without the need for powerful hardware. The company is also investing in exclusive titles and partnerships, aiming to deliver unique and compelling content that can’t be found elsewhere.

Overall, Microsoft’s decision to raise the prices of its Game Pass subscription service is a reflection of its ongoing commitment to providing a top-tier gaming experience. By continually adding new games, improving service features, and leveraging its strategic acquisitions, Microsoft is positioning Game Pass as a must-have service for gamers around the world. While the higher costs may be a point of contention, the increased value and expanded offerings are likely to be welcomed by many subscribers who appreciate the depth and quality of content available through Game Pass.
